This lecture/demo on Duke Ellington's Concerto for Cootie, delivered at Lawrence University on December 2, 2002, was designed for students and faculty in the college's Freshman Studies program. Freshman Studies, a multidisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts, has been the cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum for over fifty years. The lecturer, Fred Sturm, is Professor of Music and Director of Jazz and Improvisational Music at Lawrence. The Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble has won many awards, including Down Beat magazine's Outstanding Jazz Band Performance Award.
