Environmental Studies

The Lawrence University Environmental Studies (ENST) program
seeks to develop the environmental literacy of its students. Environmental literacy includes:

    1. A scientific understanding of the major elements of the planet’s
      natural systems, including knowledge of the underlying principles,
      experimental methods, and research tools necessary for scientific
      inquiry.
    2. Knowledge of the complex relationships between natural systems
      and human activities, including an appreciation of the cultural, political
      and economic factors influencing human interaction with the
      environment;
    3. A sense of place and an awareness of how the natural environment
      inspires creative works that elevate human cultures.

We hope that as an outgrowth of their scholarly study of the
environment, our students will become thoughtful and informed
participants in efforts to address 21st century environmental problems.
