COURSE REQUIREMENTS

To pass this course, you must produce the following materials:

• ten sets of reading notes, five of which must be submitted before Winter Weekend (that's February 6)
  
• at least two contributions to the class website
  

First, the reading notes. Each set of notes should contain the following items:

• comments on "familiar things," things that you recognize from earlier readings or experiences;
  
• comments on "unfamiliar things," things that you've never encountered before;
  
• a list of possible website entries suggested by the reading;
  
• further comments and questions, of whatever sort you'd like to make.
  

About once a week or so, I'll make a digest of the reading notes, partly because it's fun to look back and see what others have thought, and partly because I'd like to have a record of how students have responded to the readings and discussions. (This record will be useful to me as I refine and revise this course.) I should also note, before going on to discuss the website entries, that the idea and format for these reading notes (and for the digests) was suggested to me by Nina Dorrance.

Now, about the class website. We'll be creating and refining our site throughout the term, in the hope of providing information about contemporary theory to the rest of the Lawrence community--and indeed, to the rest of the world. The target audience for materials on the site is the curious beginner or novice, not the experienced scholar. Many of the entries posted on our site will not only be written for students; they'll be written by students--namely you.

GRADING SCALE

• 5% for each set of "reading notes" (10 x 5% = 50%)
  
• 25% for your contributions to the website
  
• 25% for class participation
