President Jill Beck established the Office of Engaged Learning (OEL) in 2007 with generous support from the Pieper Family Foundation. The Pieper Chair in Servant Leadership directs the OEL with administrative support from the Provost’s Office.
The OEL has worked successfully with a wide variety of organizations on and off the Lawrence campus. Community partners include the Appleton Fire Department, Sustainable Fox Valley and the Appleton Career Academy, Edison School, and the Pragati Foundation in Bangalore, India. The OEL has provided mentoring and support to student organizations including Confidence and Determination in Youth (CADY) and the Sustainable Lawrence University Garden (SLUG). We also sponsor faculty development related to service learning through our mini-grants program.
The OEL is proud to be part of Lawrence’s long tradition of civic engagement. Lawrence has been named to the Presidential Service Honor Roll for five consecutive years, one of only two schools in Wisconsin to earn this distinction.
