Office for Engaged Learning

Welcome!

Engaged Learning is outreach to the community that proceeds from coursework and the curriculum. Using what you've learned to help others, enrich them, provide expert advice. Living out what you've learned!

The unlived life is not worth examining. -- Shelden Kopp

This work has been supported by the Suzanne and Richard Pieper Family Foundation
through a gift to Lawrence's endowment that established
the Pieper Chair of Servant Leadership
.

Some Engaged Learning projects currently underway.

C.A.D.Y.
(Confidence and Determination in Youth) has run two workshops for grade school students. February's program involved the sciences and mathematics; a recent program focussed on art, music, and writing. This group is planning a College Day to give students in grades 9-10 a taste of the college experience. We will put special emphasis on recruiting students who might not think of themselves as prospective college students.

FLIP
Lawrence language majors will be making language and culture presentations at two area grade schools. The goal is to augment the third grade curriculum, which includes a study of the cultures of Mexico, Russia, and Japan.

Global Awareness
Professor Dena Skran and some of her students are in the early stages of planning a three-week trip to Sierra Leone to connect with a school she has been fundraising for. Lawrence students will experience the culture first-hand, engage in various service activities, and help distribute scholarship money.
