Welcome to the Lawrence University Voice Department Web Site! If after examining this site you have further questions about the vocal department, its program or admissions processes, please feel free to contact the chair of the voice department, Ken Bozeman, at: kenneth.w.bozeman@lawrence.edu or the director of conservatory admissions, Nathan Ament, at: nathan.ament@lawrence.edu (800-227-0982). News Releases: Lawrence alumna, soprano Heidi Stober, is featured in the January Opera News . Click here for details. Lawrence Conservatory Concert Choir has been selected to perform next March at the 2009 American Choral Directors Association national convention at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall. The concert choir, under the direction of Rick Bjella, was one of only four mixed choirs at the collegiate/university level to be accepted to the convention.
It is unlikely that you will find a school that offers more performance opportunities for the undergraduate, from solo appearances in weekly performance classes, recitals, a fully-staged opera with orchestra, musical theater, oratorio, and choral concerts to an excellent array of ensemble experiences. Each year the Conservatory produces at least one operatic production, in addition to a series of opera scene performances and departmental recitals. Master classes with guest artists and with our Artist in Residence, operatic baritone Dale Duesing, are a valuable complement to our standard curriculum. The department has a distinguished history of success in preparing singers for the professional world. Many of our graduates go on to top-ranked graduate and apprentice programs after their training here. Lawrence students have won major international competitions, including the 1998 National Metropolitan Opera Competition (the third national winner from Lawrence), the National Federation of Music Clubs National Competition. Recent graduates are performing with opera companies around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Lawrence alumni have also served on the faculties of major music schools throughout the country. If you have passions outside of music, you may elect to pursue a 5-year double-degree program with degrees in both the college and conservatory. For those up to the challenge, it is the broadest and best educational option we offer and, as an integrated program, has few if any peers in the nation. Students also have the opportunity to acquire certification in an excellent program in Choral Music Education, K-12, a program for which we have a one hundred percent placement rate for graduates. |
