Students have a variety of ensembles in which to perform and are given the responsibility of playing important roles often left to graduate students at other schools. The Symphony Orchestra, directed by David Becker, has performed such challenging works as Mahler's Symphony No. 5, Respighi's Fountains of Rome, and Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in a single season. The Wind Ensemble, under Andrew Mast, performs works by such composers as Schwantner and Colgrass and is active in recording. This group typically features one person on a part, while the Symphonic Band performs music intended for a larger ensemble. There are many opportunities to perform in a chamber setting including faculty coached brass quintets, tuba-euphonium ensemble, and brass choir. Students are also required to compete in the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble Concerto Competitions.
