Since 1996, Professor Janet Anthony has made frequent trips to conduct, perform and teach in Haiti. At the Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince, or their summer camp in Leogane, at the Dessaix-Baptiste Music School in Jacmel, and at smaller programs in Cite Soleil, Montrouis, Les Cayes, LaPlaine, Delmas 9, Saint Marc, Fondation Sodipal and Christianville, she has marveled at the dedication and thirst for learning exhibited by hundreds of students and their teachers over the years.

After her first visit to Haiti, Professor Anthony began to invite Lawrence students and colleagues to join her as volunteers and, as of the summer of 2009, over 40 have participated in one or another of the camp programs, several returning multiple times.
Students and colleagues from music education and all applied areas in the Conservatory have taught in Haiti – several have been strongly influenced in their educational focus as a result of their experiences. Two former volunteers are completing degrees in Ethnomusicology and others have gone on into Music Education, International Public Affairs and Medicine/Public Health.
As a general rule, students going to Haiti to teach in the summer music camps have had some pedagogy course work before their experience - all share in a spirit of adventure, flexibility, physical hardiness and a love of teaching.
