Lawrence's Keyboard Department is made up entirely of undergraduate students approximately 45 of them with a full-time performance faculty of three, augmented by specialists in organ, harpsichord, piano pedagogy and vocal accompanying. We pride ourselves on the individual attention that our students receive from faculty, with piano-related classes often numbering only 3-6 students, all piano faculty serving as student advisors and chamber music coaches, and faculty generally available seven days a week for lessons, advising sessions, and just the pleasure of hallway conversations!
Our facilities are first-rate: with 90 pianos under one roof 28 Steinway Grands, 12 Yamaha Grands, and all piano teaching studios equipped with two Steinway Grand pianos students can practice 8 hours a day! Should you wish to broaden your horizons on other keyboards, we boast two beautiful organs, including one of the finest Brombaugh 40-stop tracker organs, three harpsichords, and two original Broadwood fortepianos. Lessons are available to pianists on harpsichord and organ, and all pianists have access to the historical keyboards.
To find out what most piano performance majors study, you may search the Course Catalog online. Make sure to take note of the special opportunities available to you for an emphasis within the piano performance major. We offer three concentrations: pedagogy, accompanying, and jazz. Should you choose an emphasis, you would fulfill all the course work requirements of a performance major, but use your electives to take additional coursework in your area of particular interest. We have a very active pedagogy program, which involves a great deal of hands-on teaching experience, undertaken in cooperation with our excellent pre-college program at the Lawrence Academy of Music. Our accompanying program benefits from an active opera program, our full-time vocal coach, and coursework in both instrumental and vocal collaboration. And our nationally-known jazz program boasts the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble, the winner of the 2001 Downbeat Magazine College Big Band of the Year Award.
We hope that you will take some time to read more about us and the many events that will take place in Lawrence's Keyboard Department this year.
