Personally-Owned Wireless
Networking Policy
Policy Statement
- Lawrence students may connect their personally-owned wireless
network access points (WAPs), wireless hubs,
wireless routers, and similar wireless network-sharing devices to the Lawrence
campus network at ports in their assigned rooms and in common spaces
within
university
residences. The devices must be configured
in accordance with standards developed by the Office of Information
Technology Services (ITS) in order to minimize the
exposure of private information in transmission and to prevent both fraudulent
use of students' network accounts by others and use of the Lawrence
network by those who are not members of
the Lawrence
community.
- Responsibility for configuration and use of personally-owned
WAPs rests with the owner. ITS does not provide technical support for the
operation of these devices.
- Should a personally-owned WAP interfere with Lawrence-provided network resources,
the network port serving the offending device will be made inactive until the
problem is resolved.
- Lawrence faculty and staff may not connect personally-owned wireless access
points to the campus network.
Procedures
Information about the current
standards for configuring personally-owned WAPs is available on the ITS website.
When several consumer-grade WAPs are operated
close to each other, it is not uncommon for the performance of these devices
to degrade.
It
is even
possible
that wireless connections to one or more such devices may become impossible.
Lawrence may be able to provide limited help in diagnosing the source of these
difficulties (please contact the helpdesk for assistance) but does not assume
responsibility
for remedying them.
ITS is engaged in a multi-year program of providing wireless network access in
all classroom buildings and many other locations. It is anticipated that most
wireless networking needs of faculty and staff will be provided for in this
way. ITS will, however, work with faculty and staff whose wireless networking
needs are not addressed through this program. Please contact the ITS helpdesk to
initiate the process.
