Room Connection Policy

Policy Statement

Lawrence offers connections to the campus data network and the Internet from all on-campus student rooms.   Since most residence hall rooms have but a single active Ethernet connection, Lawrence will supply hubs (network devices) so that multiple data connections can be made from a room.  This enables roommates to both be logged in from the room simultaneously.  Only a single mini-hub should be checked out per room.

It is the student’s responsibility to return mini-hubs to the Helpdesk before vacating their residence hall room.  Equipment not returned will result in a charge to the student’s bill.

Network connectivity is offered without fees. Information Technology Services will support these connections up to, and including, the provided mini-hub. The individual student is responsible for judging the suitability of the personally owned computer, for its hardware and software configuration, and for its upkeep and repair. The student must also supply an Ethernet card and patch cord from the wall outlet to the computer. Patch cords are available in the Union Station.

In order to use an Ethernet connection, a student will need a sufficiently powerful personal computer with an Ethernet 10 Base-T or 10/100 Base-T network interface card (NIC).  While the purchase of an Ethernet card (NIC) will invoke added expense (about $50), it will prove useful throughout an academic career at Lawrence.  If it is not clear which adapter is needed, refer to the computer manual or contact a local vendor. If a student cannot resolve questions, please contact the Information Technology Services Helpdesk by calling 832-6570 or by sending an e-mail message to helpdesk@lawrence.edu.

NOTE: One does not need a modem on campus to access Lawrence’s data network; in fact, under some circumstances one might have to disable or remove an internal modem in order to connect to the network.  Before a student can connect to Lawrence’s network from his or her room, they must register their hardware address.  See instructions on the Information Technology Services website.
