Personal Websites

Lawrence University encourages the creation of personal websites by members of the Lawrence community. Every student, faculty, and staff member at Lawrence has an account on LU's web server with a template web page included. Faculty have 15 MB of space on the web server. Staff members have 10 MB of space on the web server. Your personal web page can be found at: www.lawrence.edu/fast/username (substitute your own Lawrence username for "username" in the address). The page you see there is your default home page. It is named default.htm.

How do I get my page on the list of homepages?

The personal page directories, located on the Directories and Other Info page, are generated by a little script that looks for pages named welcome.html.

So, if you want your page to show up on the list of homepages, simply save your home page as welcome.html instead of default.htm.

Personal web pages are not publications of Lawrence University but, rather, are publications by the individual that creates and maintains them. As such, that individual is subject to all local, state, or federal laws (including those governing copyright, libel or obscenity). Lawrence University will not monitor or otherwise censor personal web pages, but will report any complaints of potentially illegal activities to the appropriate authorities and may take other actions as noted below:

Commercial use of Lawrence University computer system is strictly prohibited.

Permission to publish a personal web page using the Lawrence computing network is contingent on the observance of the following:

Permission to publish personal web pages may be withdrawn if these requirements are violated. In such cases, network access to the offending page(s) may be removed. Appeals and possible disciplinary action will be forwarded to the appropriate campus office. Lawrence University reserves the right of the final decision regarding whether or not to publish a personal web page whose contents is in dispute.

Policies

Lawrence University WWW Policy Statement

ITS Acceptable Use Statement

Responsible Computer Use:

All students, faculty, staff, and emeriti, as members of the Lawrence community, have access to many shared computing and networking resources. Lawrence strives to provide an atmosphere that encourages access and sharing of information on local, national, and international levels. As users in the Lawrence Community, individuals must bear the responsibility to use these resources in keeping with the professional and ethical standards of conduct which the university promotes. Use of these resources should be considered a privilege, and be treated as such.

Intended Use:

Computing and networking resources at Lawrence are provided to support the academic and administrative needs of Lawrence Community members, within an intellectual environment where students, staff, and faculty may freely collaborate, both with colleagues at Lawrence as well as off-campus.

Because resources are limited, and because of stipulations in license and contractual agreements with software and hardware vendors, users must observe the following conditions:

Privacy and Security:

Every member of the Lawrence community has the right to privacy of personal information stored or transmitted via computer. The administration of computer systems must strike a balance between the goals of privacy and information sharing. The health and well-being of institutional computing resources are the individual and collective responsibility of all users, who must guard against abuses that could disrupt or threaten intended uses and operations. In general, users should not compromise personal security, nor others’ privacy, by engaging in any of the following:

Intellectual Property Rights:

In many cases, software and data that reside on Lawrence computer systems are owned by an individual, a third party, or the institution, and are protected by copyright law, license, or contract agreements. Users must abide by these agreements. Such agreements may prohibit copying software or data, resale or use of software or data for personal gain, and public disclosure of information without the owner’s authorization.

Use of the Internet Network:

Many of the principles stated thus far apply to users of the international Internet network. Internet tools such as electronic mail, file transfers, and remote login are subject to the acceptable use policies of the Internet governing body, its sub-organizations, and governmental agencies.

As a member of the Internet through membership in WiscNet, Lawrence and all Lawrence community members must adhere to the WiscNet Acceptable Use Policy, excerpted here from the July 27, 1994 revision:

WiscNet's purpose is to advance education, research, economic development, and public service by … [assisting its members to gain access to scientific, educational, and other resources]. … The network supports collaborative instruction, research, economic development, and public service. It provides access to regional, national, and international networks and hence to national resources such as supercomputer centers…

Use that is consistent with the purposes of WiscNet is acceptable. Use directly supporting approved uses is acceptable, such as: education, research … or public service. Communications that violate Wisconsin, federal, or international laws are unacceptable. Activities designed to interfere with the ability of other users to make effective use of the network are unacceptable. Using the network in a harmful or harassing manner is unacceptable.
