The following standards guide the placement and content of room identification and donor recognition signage. They apply to buildings that have adopted the emerging campus-wide system of Poblocki-produced interior signage, including Thomas A. Steitz Hall of Science, Youngchild Hall, Briggs Hall, and Main Hall, and to buildings that contain similar style signage, such as Shattuck Hall of Music.
A. Room Identification Signage for Faculty Offices
-
A.1 Specifications
- Familiar first name rather than formal first name (i.e., Tim Spurgin rather than Timothy Spurgin).
- Insertion of middle initial (i.e., Daniel J. Taylor rather than Daniel Taylor).
Poblocki sign type 1D is used. The typeface is Times.
A.2 ContentRoom identification signs are to contain the room number and the first and last name of the occupant.
At the discretion of the department the following variations may apply:
ADA requires that signs be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. In most cases, office signs will appear to the left of the doorframe.
Edge of sign should be 3 inches from the doorframe. Top of sign to floor is 62 1/2 inches (Required for ADA compliance for this size sign).
B. Room Identification Signage for Classrooms and Laboratories
-
B.1 Specifications
Poblocki sign type 1A is used. The typeface is Times.
B.2 ContentRoom identification signs are to contain the room number and the title (i.e., environmental chemistry laboratory) or functional designation of the room (e.g., seminar, lecture hall, classroom), as illustrated below.
109
Humanities Computer
Laboratory
Wherever possible, words should be fully spelled out (i.e., laboratory rather than lab).
B.3 PlacementClassroom or laboratory signs are to be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. As normal practice, but dependent upon space configuration, signs should then appear to the left of the doorframe.
Edge of sign should be 3 inches from the doorframe. Top of sign to floor is 62 1/2 inches. (Required for height consistency with faculty office signs and ADA compliance).
C. Donor Recognition Signage
-
C.1 Faculty Offices
Poblocki sign type 5A is used (10 inch x 5 inch). The typeface is Times.
C.2 Classrooms, Laboratories, and Other Large SpacesPoblocki sign type 5B (alternate layout version) is normally used, but sign size should be consistent throughout the building (10 inch x 10 inch). The typeface is Times.
C.3 Applicable to All Donor Recognition SignageThe Development Office must approve all text for donor recognition signs.
As a general rule, donor recognition is to be presented on a stand-alone sign and not incorporated with the room number or title/description of the room. (i.e., the regular version of Poblocki sign type 5B containing the room number, etc., should be avoided).
Donor recognition signs are normally to be installed immediately below (and centered underneath) room identification signs, with the top of the donor sign 1/2 inch below the bottom of the room sign.
Lettering is to be centered on the sign face, as illustrated below.
This room is named
in honor of
Banta Corporation
Foundation
The word laboratory or other description of the space (e.g., this commons, this area, these spaces) may be substituted for "room." "In memory of" may be substituted for "in honor of" when the person is deceased.
Lawrence University or Milwaukee-Downer class years are always set off by commas and a true apostrophe is used.
Examples:
Cynthia Stiehl, '89
Harold E., 72, and Mary Donn Jordan, '73
Virginia B. Hartridge, M-D '41 (Note: there is no comma following M-D)
The apostrophe preceding a numeral should be a true apostrophe, not a typewriter-like straight apostrophe. It should turn outward, not inward.
D. Directional and Other Wayfinding Signage
-
D.1 Stairwell Signage
Poblocki sign type 7A is used for signaling a stairway. Lettering is uppercase. (STAIR) The typeface is Times.
Stairway signs are to be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door (opposite the door hinge).

E. Office Tack Boards and Drop Boxes
-
E.1 Faculty Offices
Such items are normally placed to the immediate left (or right, depending on the space configuration) of the room identification sign, with 3 inches separating the edge of the room sign and the edge of the board.
Top of board to floor is 74 inches. Alignment to room sign is approximately 12 inches from the top of the room sign to the top of the board.
F. ADA Compliance
George Mattheis of Miller, Wagner, Coenen, McMahon advises that the above specifications comply with ADA regulations.
The Wisconsin Administrative Code stipulates:
"Where permanent identification is provided for rooms and spaces, signs shall be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. Where there is no wall space to the latch side of the door, including at double leaf doors, signs shall be placed on the nearest adjacent wall."
"Mounting height shall be 60 inches above the finish floor to the centerline of the sign."
"Mounting location for such signage shall be so that a person may approach within 3 inches of signage without encountering protruding objects or standing within the swing of a door."
