APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University standouts Evan Johnson and Brad Scurfield have earned Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association weekly awards.
Johnson (Suwanee, Ga./Pomfret School (Conn.), a junior goaltender, was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Scurfield (Midland, Mich./Midland), a forward, was chosen as the Freshman of the Week.
Johnson, an All-MCHA selection last season, stopped 32 of 34 shots in Lawrence's 3-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire in the season opener on Oct. 30. Johnson came up big in the second period as he stopped 15 of 16 shots during that 20 minutes, and Lawrence trailed by only a goal heading into the third period.
This marks the third time in Johnson's career that he was won a conference weekly award.
Scurfield picked up his first career goal in the third period against Eau Claire, and it was a big one. With Lawrence down 2-1 heading into the third period, Scurfield fired a shot past Blugolds goaltender Scott Pedersen just 1:11 into the period to tie the game.
Lawrence returns to action this weekend when it opens MCHA play with a home-and-home series against Concordia University of Wisconsin.
