Lawrence's Frelich picks up national football honor

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University football standout Matt Frelich has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark), a senior defensive end, also was selected as the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week. This marks the second time in his career Frelich has been chosen for the national Team of the Week. He also was selected in 2006.

Frelich was honored after a big game in Lawrence's 35-19 loss to Illinois College. The highlight of Frelich's day was his first career touchdown and interception. Frelich dropped into coverage and intercepted a Mitch Niekamp pass near the sideline and raced untouched 13 yards for the score.

Frelich finished the game with a season-high eight tackles, including seven solo, and included in that total were 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Frelich also forced a Niekamp fumble on one of the sacks and recovered the fumble on the play. Frelich also picked up a pair of pass breakups.

Frelich now has 25 tackles on the season, including 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.

This is Frelich's third weekly award of the season. In addition to the two honors this week, Frelich was named the MWC Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in week two at St. Norbert College.

Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Lake Forest College.
