APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University football standout Matt Frelich has been named the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) was chosen after he turned in his best game of the season in Lawrence's 35-19 loss to Illinois College.
The highlight Frelich's day was his first career touchdown and interception. Frelich dropped into coverage and intercepted a Mitch Niekamp pass near the sideline and raced untouched 13 yards for the score.
Frelich finished the game with a season-high eight tackles, including seven solo, and included in that total were 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Frelich also forced a Niekamp fumble on one of the sacks and recovered the fumble on the play. Frelich also picked up a pair of pass breakups.
Frelich now has 25 tackles on the season, including 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.
This marks the second time this season Frelich has been honored by the conference. He was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in week two at St. Norbert College.
The Vikings return to action Saturday when they travel to Lake Forest College.
