APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University football standout Matt Frelich has been chosen as the Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark), a senior defensive end, blocked a punt in Lawrence's game at St. Norbert College this past Saturday. Frelich blocked Rob Berger's punt to give the Vikings the ball at their own 44-yard line in the second quarter.
This marked the first time in his career Frelich has been named a Midwest Conference Player of the Week, but he was chosen for the D3football.com national Team of the Week in 2006.
It was the first blocked kick of the season for Frelich but not the first in his career.
Frelich blocked one kick as a freshman before blocking four kicks as a sophomore in 2007. The four blocked kicks is a Lawrence season record and led the Midwest Conference that season. Already Lawrence's career blocked kicks leader with five, Frelich, who missed nearly all of last season with an injury, added to his record Saturday and now has six.
Frelich finished the game against St. Norbert with five tackles, which led all Lawrence defensive linemen in the contest. Frelich has 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss and a sack, this season.
Lawrence returns to action when it travels to Grinnell College on Saturday.
