Lawrence sweeps MWC Player of the Week honors for women's soccer

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's soccer team swept the Midwest Conference Player of the Week awards.

Sophomore forward Mallory Koula (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) was named the Offensive Player of the Week and junior defender Jordan Holmes (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) was named the Defensive Player of the Week. It was the first MWC Player of the Week honors for both players.

Koula recorded a pair of hat tricks this past weekend. In this past Saturday's 10-0 win over Finlandia University, Koula scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. She made it 5-0 with a goal in the 20th minute and finished the scoring with another tally in the 59th minute.

The following day at Edgewood College, Koula scored Lawrence's final three goals of the match in a 4-0 victory over the Eagles. Koula scored two goals in a less than four minutes in the first half. She scored at 30:29 to make it 2-0 and then added another goal at 34:10 to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead. She secured the hat trick with a goal in the 86th minute.

Koula has 10 goals and 22 points on the season and leads the Midwest Conference in both categories.

Holmes was a key force on defense in both matches over the weekend. She was part of the group that held Finlandia without a shot on Saturday. The Vikings squeezed off 55 shots, including 33 in the first half, against the Lions. Holmes played some stellar individual defense against Edgewood as the Vikings limited the Eagles to just eight shots.

Lawrence goalkeeper Lindsey Ahlen (Lawrence, Kan./Bishop Seabury) had to make only five saves in the win over Edgewood.

Lawrence returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Lakeland College.
