No-hitter earns Murray MWC Pitcher of the Week honors

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University softball standout Shannon Murray has been named the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Murray (Lawrenceville, Ga./Dacula), a freshman pitcher/infielder, picked up the honor in the wake of tossing a perfect game against Alverno College on April 1. Murray struck out five and did not walk a batter in throwing only the second no-hitter in school history.

It was the first since Lauren Kost no-hit Finlandia University on April 2, 2004. Murray, who allowed only four balls to be hit out of the infield, also went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored.

Murray improved her record on the season to 5-1 and lowered her earned run average to 2.31. Murray has struck out 23 and walked only seven in 36.1 innings pitched.

Murray also is batting .486 on the season with five doubles and nine RBIs.

The Vikings, who have the best record in the conference at 8-3, return to action Wednesday when they travel to the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Lawrence opens conference play this weekend when it faces all five MWC South Division opponents at the MWC Classic in Janesville, Wis.
