APPLETON, Wis. -- Peter Brengel won a pair of individual titles to lead Lawrence University at the 2010 Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Lawrence's Boldt Natatorium.
Brengel (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitefish Bay) won the 100-yard backstroke and 200 backstroke and set three records in the process. Led by Brengel, the Lawrence men finished fourth with 365.50 points. Grinnell won the team title with 939.
A sophomore standout, Brengel won the 100 backstroke on Saturday in a time of 52.20 seconds, barely missing his own meet record of 52.13. Brengel's performance also surpassed the NCAA "B" qualifying standard.
Brengel then won the 200 backstroke in a record-breaking time of 1:53.90. He broke the school, meet and Boldt Natatorium record of Lawrence's Chas Mitchell. Mitchell time of 1:55.62 had stood as the mark to beat since 1996. Brengel also surpassed the NCAA "B" qualifying standard in the process.
Mac Watson (River Hills, Wis.) and Tom Smith (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) had three top-six finishes for the Vikings. Smith was third in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.48, fourth in the 100 breaststroke 1:01.42 and sixth in the 100 freestyle in 49.71 seconds. Watson grabbed fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:54.63, fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.31 and fifth in the 100 freestyle in 49.65.
Rebecca Hamlyn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) led the Larence women with a trio of top-four finishes. Hamlyn was edged for the title in the 100 butterfly. She took second in 1:00.20, with Lake Forest College's Ellen Stoehr winning in 1:00.18. Hamlyn also grabbed third in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.14 and took fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:20.82.
The Lawrence women placed seventh in the team standings with 271 points. Grinnell won the title with 857.
