APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University's Sam Stevens was chosen as the Midwest Conference Track Performer of the Week after his first collegiate meet.
Stevens (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port), a freshman distance runner, was competing in his first meet of the indoor season at the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Opener last Friday. Stevens won the 800 meters in 2:01.33, beating second-place finisher Kyle O'Rourke of UW-Whitewater by more than two seconds.
Stevens also teamed with Matt Frelich, Mason Cannon and Mark Sprtel to finish fourth in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:48.57.
This was the first weekly honor for Stevens, who earned all-conference honors during cross country season.
The Vikings return to action on Friday when they travel to the UW-Oshkosh Invitational.
