Lawrence's Johnson finishes as nation's leader in shutouts

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University goaltender Evan Johnson capped his record-setting hockey season by leading the nation in shutouts.

A sophomore from Suwanee, Ga., Johnson had seven shutouts in 2008-09. Steve Bounds of the College of St. Scholastica finished second with six.

A former star with the New England Huskies of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, Johnson broke multiple Lawrence records. The seven shutouts is the second-highest total in NCAA Division III history, trailing only the 10 posted by St. Norbert College's Kyle Jones in 2007-08.

Johnson set Lawrence records for shutouts in a season and also holds the career record with eight. He also set the season record for victories with 13 and moved into second place on the career list with 18.

Johnson posted three consecutive shutouts at one point during the season. He had a scoreless minutes streak of 192:26, which is the sixth-longest streak in NCAA history.

Johnson also set Lawrence season records for goals against average at 2.11 and save percentage at .918. He broke the records of 2.80, set by Brian Harrison in 1997-98, and .912, set by Andrew Isaac in 2004-05. Johnson finished 14th in the nation in goals against average and 22nd in save percentage.

Johnson helped Lawrence to the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Northern Division title with a 14-5-1 record. Lawrence finished 16-11-1 overall, setting a school record for season wins in the process.
