Kroeger, DePagter sweep top honors on All-MWC basketball team

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University's Ryan Kroeger and Joel DePagter swept the top honors on the All-Midwest Conference basketball team.

Kroeger was named the Player of the Year and DePagter was named Coach of the Year. Chris Page and Jayce Apelgren received honorable mention on the all-conference team.

This marks the second consecutive year Kroeger has been named Player of the Year. The senior guard from Glendale, Wis., was seventh in conference in scoring at 17.4 points per game while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor.

A former star at Nicolet High School, Kroeger ranked in the top 11 in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (second, 2.5), free-throw percentage (seventh, 83.1), assists per game (eighth, 3.8), steals per game (ninth, 1.3), and 3-point field goal percentage (11th, 39.4). On the season, Kroeger averaged 17.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while shooting 53.9 percent from the floor, including 40.9 percent on 3-pointers.

Kroeger is the first player in Lawrence history to win consecutive Player of the Year awards. He joins Chris Braier (2004, 2006), Adam LaVoy (2000), and DePagter (1997) as previous Player of the Year winners.

DePagter, a native of Sheboygan, Wis., won Coach of the Year after leading his team to its second consecutive conference title and MWC Tournament title. Lawrence finished 13-3 in conference play and in only two years at Lawrence, DePagter has compiled a 41-9 record.

DePagter hit several firsts with the award. He is the first man in Midwest Conference history to be named the Coach of the Year and the Player of the Year. Also, he is the first coach to win conference championships in his first two seasons as head coach.

DePagter shared Coach of the Year honors with Grinnell College's Dave Arseneault.

Page, a senior forward from Amherst, Wis., was named to the all-conference team for the first time. The former star at Amherst High School finished 12th in the conference in scoring at 13.8 points per game.

Page ranked second at 9.0 rebounds per game, third in field goal percentage at 64.7 percent, fifth in blocks per game at 1.2, and sixth in steals per game at 1.7. On the season, he averaged 13.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 59.2 percent from the floor.

Apelgren, a senior guard from Waterford, Wis., was named to the all-conference team for the first time. A former star at Waterford High School, Apelgren had a breakthrough season and finished 14th in the league in scoring at 13.1 points per game. He led the conference in field goal percentage at 69.1 percent and was third in 3-point shooting at 57.1 percent.

On the season, Apelgren averaged 12.1 points per game while shooting 65.3 percent from the floor, including 52 percent on 3-pointers.

Lawrence returns to action on Friday when it plays Washington University of St. Louis in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Elmhurst College.
