Six Vikings named to all-conference football team

APPLETON, Wis. -- Six Lawrence University football players have been chosen for the All-Midwest Conference Team.

Nick Korn and Derek Micke were chosen for the second team, and Tyler Krzewina, Jack Peters, Joe Austin, and Jeremy Reider received honorable mention.

Korn, a senior wide receiver from Cashton, was Lawrence's lone selection on offense. The former Cashton High School star caught 44 passes for 703 yards and seven touchdowns, including an 86-yard touchdown grab against conference champion Monmouth College.

Micke, a freshman cornerback from Kaukauna and former star at Kaukauna High School, had a superb rookie season. He led the league with 13 pass breakups and was tied for third with four interceptions. He had 25 tackles, including one for loss, and recovered a fumble.

Krzewina, another former Kaukauna star, was chosen for the all-conference team for the third consecutive season. The safety was second on the team with 56 tackles, which included 10 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also had three pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Peters, a Shicoton native, was tops among the defensive linemen with 39 tackles. The sophomore defensive end and former Shiocton High School star had a team-high 13 tackles for loss and led the team with 5.5 sacks.

Austin, a junior from Haslett, Mich., was in first season of playing football for the Vikings. The former Haslett High School standout played safety and was fifth on the team with 45 tackles. He recorded five tackles for loss, which included two sacks. Austin also intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble, and forced two more.

Reider, an Appleton native and former Appleton North High School standout, recorded 23 tackles from his nose guard position. He had three tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, and recovered a fumble.

Lawrence finished the season with a 4-5 record and ended with a three-game winning streak. Lawrence opens the 2006 season Sept. 2 at the University of Minnesota-Morris.
