APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University women's soccer player Candice Gangl has been named the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Gangl, a sophomore goalkeeper from Lakeville, Minn., won the honor after posting her first career shutout in a 2-0 win over Ripon College last Thursday.
The former star at Lakeville High School made four saves in the win, including a spectacular diving effort while Lawrence was holding a 1-0 lead. She improved her goals against average to 2.33 and upper her save percentage to .750 on the season.
Gangl was a first-team All-Midwest Conference selection last season as a freshman, when she played every minute in net for the Vikings this season. She had a 6-10 record, with a 1.94 goals against average and a .806 save percentage in 2004.
The Vikings return to action on Wednesday when they host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference match at 4:00 p.m.
