APPLETON, Wis. -- Dave Brown went out a winner.
The Lawrence University football coach announced his resignation this past Tuesday,
and his team gave him a fine going-away present Saturday at the Banta Bowl.
Lawrence rolled up 456 yards of offense and handed Macalester College a 35-7
nonconference loss.
This was the final game for Brown, who served as the Vikings’ head coach
for six seasons and was the team’s defensive coordinator for six seasons
prior to that.
Lawrence (2-8) dominated the game and led 21-0 early in the second quarter.
Halfback Adrell Bullock, who ran 19 times for a career-high 173 yards, got the
scoring started with a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:14 left in the first quarter
that capped a 44-yard scoring drive.
The Vikings made it 14-0 on their next possession. On a third-and-9 from the
Lawrence 49-yard line, quarterback Eric Aspenson hit Jake Tewalt on a slant
pass and he ran past the Macalester defense for the touchdown.
Bullock then sprinted 59 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second
quarter to make it a 21-0 Lawrence lead.
Aspenson capped the scoring in the first half when he found Nick Korn on a 13-yard
touchdown pass with 49 seconds left and that gave Lawrence a 28-0 edge.
Macalester (1-8) finally got on the board when Adam Denny hit Nate Vernon on
a 22-yard scoring pass with 3:10 left in the third quarter.
After a failed on-sides kick, Aspenson hit Anthony Totoraitis on a 42-yard scoring
pass two plays later to complete the scoring. It was the first touchdown reception
of his career for the senior tight end.
Aspenson completed 7 of 19 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns on the
day.
Linebacker Joe Vander Zanden led the Lawrence defense, which allowed Macalester
to rush for only 58 yards on 32 carries. Vander Zanden piled up a game-high
12 tackles, including three for loss and a sack. He also intercepted a pass
and forced a fumble.
