APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University men's soccer player Lisandro Lopez del Valle scored only one goal last week, but it was a big one.
Lopez del Valle was named the Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his goal against Beloit College propelled Lawrence into the Midwest Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season.
Lopez del Valle, a sophomore midfielder from Buenos Aires, Argentina, scored in the 44th minute to give Lawrence a 1-0 lead. The ball deflected off a Beloit defender and Lopez del Valle easily beat the Beloit goalkeeper to the loose ball. He lofted it over the keeper and it found the net for his second goal of the season. The Vikings forged a 1-1 overtime tie with Beloit that sent both teams into this weekend's conference tournament.
Lawrence (7-6-3) faces top seed St. Norbert College at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the first semifinal at the Minahan Stadium Complex in De Pere. Beloit faces Carroll College in the other semifinal, and the winners meet at noon Saturday with an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament at stake.
