APPLETON, Wis. -- Four Lawrence University men's soccer players were chosen for the All-Midwest Conference team, and the Vikings' Blake Johnson was named Coach of the Year.
Forward Rodrigo Gomes was selected for the first team, and midfielder Cole Brittain, defender Brett Suhayda, and goalkeeper Chris Perry were all on the second team.
Gomes, a freshman from Buenos Aires, Argentina, led the team in scoring and was second in the conference with 11 goals. He added three assists for 25 points, which placed him fifth in the league.
Brittain, a freshman from Ben Wheeler, Texas, scored eight goals and had three assists for 19 points. The former standout at T.K. Gorman High School was eighth in the league in goals and ninth in points.
Suhayda, a junior from Oswego, Ill., was the heart of the Lawrence defense. Suhayda, a former star at Oswego High School, led a defense that posted six shutouts and allowed only 1.53 goals per game.
Perry, a junior from Mission, Kan., posted an 8-3-1 record in goal. He had an .825 save percentage, a 1.27 goals against average and five shutouts.
Johnson earned the top coaching honor after making the Vikings the surprise team of the conference. The Vikings went 9-6-2 overall and finished fourth in the conference with a 5-3-1 mark after taking eighth in 2002. Lawrence was also the only conference team to beat league champion St. Norbert College.
