Shanda returns to Lawrence baseball team as assistant coach

APPLETON, Wis. -- Former Lawrence University catcher Jason Shanda returns to the Vikings as an assistant baseball coach for the 2005 season.

Shanda, a former standout at Madison East High School, led the Vikings in hitting at .398 and batted .345 in conference play in 2002. Shanda picked up a school-record 43 hits and had seven doubles, three triples, two homers, and a career-high 26 runs batted in. He also earned MWC Player of the Week honors once during the season. To cap a brilliant senior season, Shanda received first team all-conference honors.

A two-time all-conference selection, Shanda finished his career as Lawrence's career hits leader with 133 and in games played with 124. He compiled a .345 career batting average, which puts him in tenth place on Lawrence's career list. He also is in the top ten in runs scored, at-bats, doubles, RBIs, and walks.

Shanda joins a coaching staff that led Lawrence to its most wins since 1989. The Vikings return six all-conference selections and all but one starter.
