Lawrence University's Burris takes MWC Player of the Week honors

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University softball star Jenny Burris was selected as the Midwest Conference Player of the Week.

Burris, a senior shortstop from Gurnee, Ill., won the honor after leading Lawrence to a 4-0 record and a berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament. Burris, a former standout at Warren Township High School, hit .727 on the week. She went 8-for-11 during the week with four runs scored, a triple, two home runs, and three runs batted in. Burris, the two-time Midwest Conference Player of the Year, also posted a 1.455 slugging percentage and .769 on-base percentage.

Burris was 3-for-4 with a game-winning home run in Lawrence's game one victory over Carroll College last Thursday and 1-for-1 with a solo homer in game two. She also was 1-for-3 and 2-for-3 in the Vikings' doubleheader sweep of Beloit on Saturday.

The 4-0 record this past week propelled Lawrence into the conference tournament, which will be played at Lake Forest College Friday and Saturday. This marks the third consecutive season Lawrence has reached the league tournament, which determines the conference champion and awards an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Founded in 1847, Lawrence University has produced seven Rhodes Scholars and was again named one of the country's best national liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report in its 2003-04 Guide to American Colleges.
