Lawrence track and cross country star Curtis chosen for academic all-district team

APPLETON, WIS. - Lawrence University's Valerie Curtis has been selected for the Verizon Academic All-District 5 Track and Cross Country Team.

Curtis, who competes in both track and cross country for the Vikings, was chosen for the second team, which is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Of the 20 athletes selected for the team, she was one of only two athletes from the Midwest Conference to be selected.

A native of Shullsburg and former star at Shullsburg High School, Curtis will graduate this month with degrees in physics and biology, and she has a 3.83 grade point average.

Curtis was an All-Midwest Conference performer in cross country, a conference champion in track, and a nine-time academic all-conference selection, the maximum number that can be achieved. She also qualified for the 2002 NCAA Division III Championships in cross country.

A three-time All-Midwest Conference performer in cross country, Curtis had her best finish ever at the conference meet when she took third in 2001 and 2002. A key member of Lawrence's 1999 and 2001 conference championship squads, Curtis, who won the title at the Lawrence Invitational this season, placed in the top five in seven of ten events in 2002.

Curtis, a former conference champion in the 5,000 meters, placed in an event at the Midwest Conference indoor and outdoor track championships 14 times during her career.

Founded in 1847, Lawrence University has produced seven Rhodes Scholars and was named one of the country's "best national liberal arts colleges" by U.S. News and World Report in its 2002-03 Guide to American Colleges.
