Lawrence student-athletes receive awards at 2003 Honors Celebration

APPLETON, WIS. - Eleven Lawrence University student-athletes received awards recently at the 2003 Honors Celebration.
The awards and winners are as follows.

The Ruth Bateman Award, given to a woman athlete for leadership and for excellence in scholarship and athletic ability.
Sarah Slivinski, Eagle River, soccer and track

The Iden Charles Champion Cup, for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit, and loyalty.
Matt Melchiori, Appleton, ice hockey

The Arthur C. Denney Trophy, given to the track man who has outstanding team spirit and leadership and who has scored the greatest number of points during the season.
Kolade Agbaje-Williams, Evergreen Park, Ill.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women, to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics.
Claire Getzoff, Evanston, Ill., basketball

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men, to the freshman male who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics.

Chris Braier, Wauwautosa, basketball

The Bernard E. Heselton Award, established in 1981 by friends and relatives in memory of Bernie Heselton, Lawrence's legendary football coach and director of athletics. It is given each year to the most dedicated graduating senior football player.
Chris McGinley, Mount Horeb

The Ralph V. Landis Award, established by the Letterman of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete.
Tom Carroll, Elmhurst, Ill., swimming

The Letterwinner Award, presented by the "L" Club to those outstanding seniors who have earned eight or more letters.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Men, given to a senior for all-around athletic ability in two sports, sportsmanship, school spirit, and scholarship.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Women, given to a senior woman for all-around athletic ability in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit, and scholarship.
Valerie Curtis, Shullsburg, cross country and track

The Marion Read Award, for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics.
Shelley Ebert, Janesville, cross country and track

Founded in 1847, Lawrence University has produced seven Rhodes Scholars and was named one of the country's "best national liberal arts colleges" by U.S. News and World Report in its 2002-03 Guide to American Colleges.
