Ljung earns Rookie of the Week honors for third time this season

APPLETON, WIS. - Lawrence University freshman goalie Daniel Ljung has been named the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for the third time this season.

Ljung earned the honor for his gritty performance in a 5-4 overtime win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Jan. 7 and his solid effort in a 5-2 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Jan. 11.

Ljung, a native of Avesta, Sweden, stopped 19 shots in the conference win over MSOE, and that victory allowed the Vikings to take sole possession of second place in the MCHA. He came up big several times in the third period, as Lawrence rallied to force the overtime and then won the game with just nine seconds remaining in the extra period on Matt Melchiori's goal.

Ljung made 39 saves, including 16 in the third period, in the loss at UW-Stevens Point.

This marks the fifth time this season the former Avesta Bizons star has been honored by the conference. Ljung has been Rookie of the Week three times and earned Goalie of the Week honors twice. For the season, Ljung has a 3.87 goals against average and an .895 save percentage.

The Vikings are back in action this weekend, as they make the long trip to face the University of Minnesota-Crookston on Friday and Saturday.
