Lawrence women's soccer headed back to NCAA Tournament

APPLETON, WIS. - For the second consecutive season the Lawrence University women's soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Vikings earned the berth in the national tournament by winning the Midwest Conference Tournament championship Saturday at Lake Forest College. Lawrence (12-5-1) defeated St. Norbert College (9-7-1) 1-0 in overtime in the championship match. The Vikings will find out who they will play in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament when the pairings are announced Sunday evening.

Lawrence got the lone goal of the match in the 104th minute, thanks to the school's all-time leading scorer Megan Tiemann. The senior from Kent, Wash., put a rebound past St. Norbert goalkeeper Pam Mathes and the celebration was on. It was Tiemann's 11th goal of the season.

Lawrence dominated the match, outshooting St. Norbert 20-7, but couldn't find the back of the net until 103:59, with just a minute left in the first overtime period. Goalkeeper Katie Wilkin made four saves to record the shutout for the Vikings.

This is the second time the Vikings have reached the NCAA Tournament, the first coming a season ago when Lawrence claimed the Midwest Conference championship. The Vikings were eliminated after a 2-0 loss at Albion College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
