Pair of Viking softball players named to All-MWC team

APPLETON, WIS. - Two Lawrence University softball players have been named to the All-Midwest Conference team, in a vote by league coaches.

Shortstop Jenny Burris and catcher Becca Peglow were both chosen for the North Division team. Leading the way for the Vikings was Burris, a freshman from Gurnee, Ill. Burris, a former standout at Warren Township High School, batted .425 in conference play with three doubles, two triples, and 11 runs batted in. Hitting in the lead-off position, Burris scored 17 runs in MWC play, had a .600 slugging percentage, and a .490 on-base percentage.

For the season, Burris hit a robust .440 and broke the school season records for hits with 51 (the previous record was 47), triples with seven (six), runs scored with 37 (34), total bases with 79 (68), and stolen bases with 26 (23). She also had 11 doubles, one homer, and 21 RBIs.

Peglow saved her best for last. The senior from Minnetrista, Minn., hit .271 this season and batted .333 in the conference. During league play, Peglow had a pair of doubles and nine RBIs, and she finished the season with three doubles and 15 RBIs.

Peglow led the team in fielding for the second time in her career, finishing with a 1.000 fielding percentage. The former Mound-Westonka High School star didn't commit an error this season and had just five in her career despite starting all four years behind the plate. Peglow also played a key role in developing a young pitching staff. With virtually no experienced pitchers back from a season ago, the Vikings still managed to post a team earned run average of 3.82.

Despite losing six starters to graduation after the 2000 season, the Vikings put together a solid record of 19-16, including an 8-5 mark in the MWC, in 2001. Lawrence finished third in the MWC North Division for the second consecutive season.
