Lawrence University lands five on All-MWC baseball team

APPLETON, WIS. - Jason Shanda leads Lawrence University's selections to the All-Midwest Conference North Division baseball team.

The senior catcher from Madison was a first-team selection, and juniors Mike Hart, Jeremy Tollefson, Chad Zutter, and Ryan Zutter were all named to the second team.

Shanda, a former standout at Madison East High School, led the team in hitting at .398 and batted .345 in conference play. Shanda picked up a school-record 43 hits in 2002 and had seven doubles, three triples, two homers, and a career-high 26 runs batted in. He also earned MWC Player of the Week honors once during the season.

Shanda had his best game of the season against Marian College when he went 5-for-5 with two homers and seven RBIs. In conference play, he had a perfect day against St. Norbert, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs against the Green Knights.

A second-team all-conference selection last season, Shanda finished his career as Lawrence's career hits leader with 133 and in games played with 124. He compiled a .345 career batting average, which puts him in tenth place on Lawrence's career list. He is also in the top ten in runs scored, at-bats, doubles, RBIs, and walks.

Tollefson, a junior shortstop from Middleton, was third on the team in hitting at .351 and batted .339 in MWC play. Tollefson, who was a first-team all-conference pick as a freshman, led the team with three homers and tied for the team lead with seven doubles and three triples.

Tollefson did some serious damage against conference foes Carroll College and Beloit College. In four games, two at Carroll and two at home against Beloit, Tollefson batted .529 by going 9-for-17 with two doubles, a triple, a homer, and three RBIs for a .941 slugging percentage. The former Middleton High School star was also perfect in the field, handling 22 chances without an error.

Hart, who did nothing but pitch during his first two seasons at Lawrence, moved to second base and designated hitter duties this spring. The Evanston, Ill., native was second on the team in hitting at .361 and second in hitting during conference play at .383. The junior went 26-for-72 with a double, a triple and seven RBIs.

Hart feasted on the pitching of the top team in the league, Ripon College, and Carroll. In those eight games, Hart batted .476 by going 10-for-21 with a double and three RBIs. Hart also appeared in two games on the mound, picking up a save against Union College on Lawrence's spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla.

Chad Zutter was the team's best hitter in conference play, batting .410 while appearing in 13 conference games. He had three doubles and five RBIs and also swiped three bases. The junior second baseman from Colfax finished the season with a .316 average. Zutter really came on late in the season, batting .355 over his final ten games.

In conference play, the former standout at Colfax High School, battered the Carroll pitching staff, hitting .625 in four games against the Pioneers.

Ryan Zutter, the twin brother of Chad Zutter and another Colfax High School star, saw his season cut short after getting hit in the eye with a ball. Zutter, a junior utility player, missed the final six conference games but batted .312 in ten conference games with a double, a homer, and ten RBIs. For the season, he hit .306 with six doubles, two homers, and 21 RBIs. Zutter, a steady performer at the plate all season, had his best games of the season in a doubleheader at Beloit, where he went 3-for-8 with five RBIs against the Buccaneers.

Lawrence finished the season with a 13-19 overall record and a 4-12 mark in the MWC. The 13 wins is the most for the Vikings since 1989.
