Carl Polley, '01, is teaching English at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, China. He "especially likes being able to eat good 饺子, 牛拉面, and 北京烤鸭 whenever he wants." Carl plans to return to America for a J.D. International Law after working in China.

Justin Ritzinger, '99, graduated from Lawrence with a major in Religious Studies and a minor in Chinese language and then spent a year on the Watson Fellowship traveling through China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, studying the revival of pilgrimage through examining the pilgrim's donations to reconstruction projects. He is currently in Taiwan, teaching TOEFL at night for the Princeton Review and working as a translator for Dharma Drum Mountain International, one of the three largest Buddhist organizations in the country. He plans to apply to graduate schools next year to pursue a Ph.D. in Religious Studies and continue his work on Buddhism.

Tara Shingle, '99, is working at the Beijing MiDi School of Music in China. She is teaching jazz history, piano lessons, and English.

Phil McKenna, '99, is currently working as a field biologist on the California Condor Reintroduction Program in Big Sur, CA.

Scott Leier, '97, participated in the Associated China Program in Tianjin and did independent research on entrepreneurs in China's emerging market economy while a student at Lawrence. As a winner of a Watson Fellowship, Scott was able to return to China for a year following graduation to continue his studies.

Kira Brownell, '96, also received a Watson Fellowship. She spent a year in Japan, studying landscape gardening and serving as an apprentice in the famous Kenryoken garden in Kanazawa.

Amy Ilstrup, '95, and Olivia Stahlmann, '96, were both NESP interns in '97. Amy received a Master's degree from the University of Minnesota and is currently working for a public relations agency. Olivia is with Medtronic.

Jill Shaw, '95, studied in Tianjin, China, as a part of the Associated China Program. Following graduation, she taught English in Japan for a year as part of a JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Award. She is now a graduate student in Chinese and Japanese at Stanford University and recently received an NSEP fellowship to study at Qinghua University in China.

Traci Suiter, '95, received a Foreign Language Area Studies Award at Cornell University, where she is a graduate student in linguistics and Chinese and Japanese.

William Rohrbach, '94, upon graduation from Lawrence, received a Watson Fellowship to study the role of art museums in China and Taiwan.


 

Placement Exam
Placement exams in written  and oral Chinese are given during Freshman Orientation. See the department chair, Prof. Jane Parish Yang for on demand exams at other times during the academic year.
