Science Experiments with ELL (English Language Learners)

from Ferber Elementary School in Appleton

In May of 2002, more than 10 ELL students and their teachers came to visit a Lawrence chemistry lab. Students in groups of 3 or 4 rotated through stations exploring the chemistry of fireworks, acids and bases, liquid nitrogen and novel materials. After this each student prepared a homemade sparkler and got to take it home.

In May of 2003, 15 ELL students and several teachers can to the chemistry labs for a series of experiments involving the electrical conductivity of solutions. Each student prepared a different solution by mixing common chemicals (i.e. salt, sugar, vinegar, milk etc) with water. The conductivity of each solution was tested and the presence of ions - or electron carriers - was confirmed by whether or not the light bulb attached to the conductivity tester lit up.

In May of 2005, four ELL students from Ferber Elementary came to Lawrence to do some experiments with two undergraduate chemistry students, Kim and Giang. The group experimented with color mixing and acid/base reactions.

Lawrence students who helped with the ELL lab day included Temi Akintomide, Amy Dendy, Laura Houser, Sandy Vang, Ivan Ayon, Kristin Schultz, Nate Schreiber, and Mark Cronan
