Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Program

Lawrence's Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) program was launched in 2003 by a group of three faculty. Professors Karen Nordell (chemistry), Dave Hall (biochemistry) and Jeff Collett (physics), Andrew Knudsen (geology) and David Thompson (chemistry) are developing the interdisciplinary N&N program in three areas: (1) the incorporation of more nanoscale science into the introductory chemistry, biochemistry and physics curricula, (2) the offering of two team-taught intermediate level courses on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and (3) impact on the broader community through dissemination and outreach efforts, including connections with Lawrence's ArtsBridge Project.

Great News! In the fall of 2005, the N&N program received a second round of funding from the NSF-NUE program. We are thrilled about how the $165k can make a positive impact to expand and enrich the program.

Recent N& N Events

  • 16 high school students and their teacher, Mr. DeMay from Appleton's Valley New School came to campus on January 12, 2006 to prepare ferrofluid.
  • In December, 2005 Karen Nordell and George Lisensky (Beloit College) co-presented a workshop on teaching nanoscience at the Third Annual African Materials Research Society Conference in Marrakech, Morocco. Check out a few pictures from the trip.

  • In October 2005, Lawrence hosted the Midwest Association of Chemistry Teachers at Liberal Arts Colleges (MACTLAC) conference whose theme was “Exploring Nanoscience from a Chemical Perspective”. More than 100 chemistry faculty from colleges in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri attended the meeting.
