Robert McMillen Professor of Chemistry
B.A., Luther College, Decorah, Iowa
M.A., Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Madison

Prof. Lokensgard joined the Lawrence faculty in 1967. His teaching has regularly included the Organic and Advanced Organic courses, along with less frequent contributions to the introductory chemistry sequence, Instrumental Analysis, and Freshman Studies. He served as department chair from 1992-2006. He will retire at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year.

Professor Lokensgard's research interests have range rather widely over the general area of physical organic chemistry, including: studies of organic reaction mechanisms, especially hydrolysis reactions; applications of NMR spectroscopy; identification and synthesis of natural products, particularly insect defensive compounds, pheromones, or kairomones; new synthetic reactions; strain and stereochemical effects on organic reactions; control and modification of the surface properties of dendrimers; and computer applications to chemistry, including molecular modeling for research and teaching.
