Welcome to the Lawrence

Advanced Placement in Chemistry

Students with strong high school backgrounds may seek advanced placement or course credit that recognizes that preparation. Students who submit scores of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement examination in chemistry from the Educational Testing Service are awarded 6 units of course credit (the equivalent of one course). The same is true for IB higher level examination scores of 5, 6 or 7.

Students with AP 5 or IB 7 scores may speak with a department member about the option of enrolling in intermediate level courses (e.g., Analytical, Organic, or Inorganic).

Students who have submitted either AP exam or IB higher level course scores and who choose not to seek advanced placement should enroll in CHEM 116 as their starting point in the chemistry curriculum.

Students with more than one year of high school chemistry, but who have not taken AP or IB exams, should take the Chemistry Placement Exam and consult their advisor or a member of the chemistry department about placement.
