Biology Faculty and Staff
Jodi Sedlock
My love for wild places and things began as a child playing in the north woods of Wisconsin and continues today in my life as an artist and ecologist. In art school I learned how to see the world around me; I learned that by drawing a bear skull -- all of its articulations, protrusions and contours – I could understand it. This fascination with the details of nature led me from illustrating bat skulls and rat feet at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago to a Ph.D in terrestrial ecology. I spend time every summer in the Philippines, usually with undergrads, studying the diversity and ecology of bats in pristine and human-altered habitats. I work with Filipino colleagues documenting the diversity and distribution of bat species. I seek answers to ecological questions relevant to wildlife and landscape management and am involved in environmental education in rural Philippine communities. Since art can transcend language, I am working with Lawrence art and biology students -- as well as educators in the Philippines -- to create illustrated posters and modules for rural schools.
