Helen R. Klebesadel, chair, Art Department

This Sesquicentennial year was opened by the Ringing of the Main Hall Bell ceremony on Friday, January 10, 1997. Carol Butts, LU '49 and archivist, called our attention to some interesting facts; one of which suggested that when the university was founded in 1847, studio art was referred to as an "ornamental branch." Emeline Crooker, LU's first studio faculty member, taught with a very different view of student expectations than we have today. As you will see from this newsletter, our alumae/i have chosen diverse, interdisciplinary career paths. The LU art and art history courses have prepared them to take advantage of existing possibilities and to create their own opportunities with confidence in their ability to succeed. Since this newsletter started three years ago, technology moved us into our own website...a long way from the "ornamental branch" of the university.
