Art History

An integral part of a liberal arts curriculum, the courses of the art department encourage aesthetic awareness and appreciation by emphasizing the interdependence of art-making, art history, and other creative and intellectual fields. Lawrence's art history program focuses on four major periods: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, and Modern. Students planning a major in art history should take the introductory courses Art History 100 and Art History 102 in their freshman and sophomore years. Students may take a maximum of 21 credits in the art department, provided that no more than 15 are in either studio art or art history.
