The Mission of the Lawrence University String Project is to:
- Provide our students with an affordable opportunity for musical enjoyment and education through the study of stringed instruments.
- Encourage the personal development of our students by providing them with an outlet for self-expression within a structured environment, and an opportunity to share our accomplishments within the community.
- Create a partnership between Lawrence University and area communities, by providing accessible sting education for area students, and teaching experience for Lawrence University string students.
The String Project is a teacher-training program providing instruction on the violin, viola, cello and bass to area children. Classes are taught by Lawrence University string majors under the supervision of a “Master Teacher,” a certified, experienced strings instructor. The String Project consists of the following:
- The Dolce Orchestra, the beginning level group, is made up of third and fourth grade students. Foundational performing and note reading skills are established at this level.
- The Allegro Orchestra is for those in their second or third year of study on their stringed instrument. Students are Dolce graduates who wish to continue playing in an orchestra or students new to String Project who wish to experience ensemble playing for the first time. consists of graduates of Dolce Orchestra.
- The Presto Orchestra, consists of students who have received instruction for three years or more pior to enrolling.
The cost for instruction is $164 for the full year and a $10 annual registration fee. Additional costs include instrument rental or purchase, and purchase of the method book used for the Dolce and Allegro orchestras.
