The String Project

In partnership with the American String Teachers Association (A.S.T.A.), Lawrence University was selected to implement a String Project - a teacher-training program for college students that also provides area children with affordable instruction on the violin, viola, cello and string bass. Classes are taught by Lawrence University Conservatory of Music string majors under the supervision of Lead Teacher Carrie Gruselle, a certified, experienced strings instructor.

Students are divided into four orchestras, Dolce, Allegro, Presto and Vivace. The Dolce orchestra is for beginners in grades 3–5. Graduates of Dolce advance to the Allegro orchestra. Presto consists of students who have received instruction for three years or more prior to enrolling. New this year is the Vivace ensemble. These are Presto graduates who will pursue advanced study of their instruments in a chamber group setting.

Students in all orchestras attend two rehearsals each week. Two 15-week semesters include “informances” and performance opportunities.
