Individual lesson study forms the core of the curriculum at Lawrence Academy of Music. This one-to-one
relationship with a caring, professional instructor combined with a commitment
to regular
practice enables students to engage in the process of acquiring the technical
and musical skills necessary for mastery of their chosen instrument. Lessons are available on most instruments, including piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, voice, harp and percussion.
All students are encouraged to supplement the private lesson experience with musicianship and ensemble opportunities to broaden their total musical understanding.
Music lessons are taught in the Academy building at 100 Water Street and at other locations. Conservatory faculty and student teachers teach in the Music-Drama Center of Lawrence University. Students will be informed of the location of their lessons during registration.
Individual instruction is available on the following instruments:

| Viola | Bassoon | Saxophone |
| Violin | Clarinet | Trumpet |
| String Bass | Flute | Trombone |

The group class may include informal student performances, topics in musicianship, duets or chamber music, or music theory. There will be no more than six students in each group lesson.
Voice Instruction
Private voice instruction is not recommended until singers are in high school. Young singers interested in Academy programs are encouraged to register for Early Childhood Music classes or enroll in a Girl Choir. Singers in middle school are encouraged to register for Fundamentals of Singing.

The harp has a long and storied history from ancient Egypt and Greece, to Ireland, France, and America. There are harps to fit just about any style of music; folk harps, celtic harps, concert grand harps, and even electric harps. So no matter what your musical preference, there is a harp for you! Now is your chance to explore this amazing instrument with master teacher, Leila Ramagopal.
The Academy will offer private lessons, small group, and ensembles.Harp instruction is recommended for students aged 8 through adult.

Performance
Performance represents an essential part of a student's musical growth. Students are urged to take advantage of opportunities to perform and to listen to others perform. Academy performances include departmental recitals, all-student recitals, honors recitals, faculty recitals, master classes, "informances" and numerous performances by all our ensembles during the year. Most are free or at very low admission cost and families are strongly encouraged to attend as many as possible.
Honors Recital
The Academy of Music presents two Honors Recitals annually, in November and February in the Lawrence Memorial Chapel. Participants are nominated by their teachers; finalists are chosen by audition, playing before two judges. A reception in their honor immediately follows the recital. The Honors Recitals are free and open to the public.
Recital dates:
Sunday, November 6, 2011, 2:00 p.m., Lawrence Memorial Chapel
Sunday, January 29, 2012, 2:00 p.m., Lawrence Memorial Chapel
Master Classes and Guest Artists
Over the course of each academic year, guest teaching artists from other parts of the country visit the Lawrence Academy of Music. Students who study with Academy or Conservatory teachers are nominated to participate for free or at an extremely low cost. Master classes are always free and open to observers and family members. Specific information is available on our website and through studio teachers.
