Music Composition and Arranging
Learn how to write and arrange pieces of music. Class sessions will look at several styles of music that demonstrate the craft of composition. Students will receive guidance and advice while composing at least one piece of music and will perform the original compositions in a recital. While formal music theory classes are not required, a working knowledge of notation, key signatures, and scales is helpful. Notation software is not required for the class, but is helpful if the student has access.
Open to students in grades 9-12 (advanced students in grade 8 will be considered); Enrollment minimum 4, maximum 8

Group Piano Lessons
Group piano lessons can be an excellent approach to beginning piano study. This setting allows students to learn from their peers as well as the instructor and provides a highly motivated environment for the study of music.
Classes are taught in groups of three or four similar-age students in the brand-new-state-of-the-art Clavinova digital keyboard lab. Students wear headphones to communicate with the instructor and to work in groups. Emily Robida, instructor for the course and certified in Orff Schulwerk Level II, will utilize concepts of movement in music to enhance the student’s knowledge away from the piano and to build a strong rhythmic foundation. Instruction includes individual concentration on technique and hand position.
Due to the group nature of the class, make-ups are not possible (unless canceled by teacher or Academy). Students are expected to practice any assigned materials they may have missed in order to stay on track with the rest of the group.
A one-year enrollment commitment is required, with the intention of the program to be an enrollment of two consecutive years. Upon completion of the two-year track, students will be placed with private instructors if so desired. Placement cannot be guaranteed if students do not finish the two-year curriculum.
An adult group piano class is also offered for beginners and "rusty" experienced players.

String Repertoire Class
All violin students who are studying Suzuki Book I - VI and viola students
through Suzuki Book V are encouraged to participate in the String Repertoire
class.
In addition to reviewing standard string repertoire from the various Suzuki
books, the classes allow string students of all levels to explore a variety
of musical styles including folk, jazz, and contemporary works. Sight reading
and regular technical segments will also be highlighted.
The repertoire classes provide opportunities for regularly scheduled solo or
group performances. Students learn proper concert etiquette either as a performer
or as an audience member supporting others. In addition, an accompanist is
available to the students for a monthly dress rehearsal and performance, allowing
students the benefit of working with a pianist. Minimum class size: 10.
