New Horizons Music

Learn to play music in a band or orchestra as an adult--even if you have no musical experience! Each year the Academy of Music sponsors three trips to Milwaukee to attend the Florentine Opera season productions. The 2009-10 productions include Giacomo Puccini’s great melodrama Tosca; Elmer Gantry by Robert Aldridge and Herschel Garfein based on the satire by American novelist Sinclair Lewis; and the season will conclude with the illustrious tragedy Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. Academy voice specialist Carol Jegen will preview the three operas and host the outings. Special pricing includes opera tickets, preview classes and round-trip coach bus transportation to the Sunday matinee performances at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in Milwaukee. Registrations for the 2009-10 season are now being accepted. Enrollment is limited based on bus occupancy and seating availability.

The 2008-09 season will conclude on April 19, 2009 with The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Group Piano Lessons-Adult

If you have always wanted to play the piano, a novice who is ready to progress, or simply rusty after years away from piano study, please join us this year in the relaxed setting of a group environment. Group piano lessons can be an excellent approach to piano study. This setting allows students to learn from their peers as well as the instructor and provides a highly motivated environment for the study of music.

Classes are taught in groups of three or four adults in the state-of-the-art Clavinova digital keyboard lab. Students will be guided through fundamental theory knowledge, technique issues, and standard repertoire. Instruction includes individual concentration on technique and hand position.

Due to the group nature of the class, make-ups are not possible (unless canceled by teacher or Academy). Students are expected to practice any assigned materials they may have missed in order to stay on track with the rest of the group.
