Windows XP Registration Guide

Registration on the Lawrence University Network is necessary in order to access the Internet, printers and shared document folders across campus. Follow this guide sequentially to successfully register your personal computer. If you need assistance, please contact the Helpdesk.

STEP 1: ETHERNET ADAPTER AND CABLES

An Ethernet adapter and cable are required to physically connect your personal computer to the Lawrence University network. To connect:

  1. While your computer is OFF, connect one end of your Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your computer and the other end to the Ethernet port in the wall.
  2. Turn your computer on; one or more lights on your Ethernet card should be green.

Connect multiple computers with a hub:
If you and your roommate/s brought computers, a hub is necessary to physically connect to the single data port in your room. Mini hubs are available for check out from the Helpdesk.

What about wireless?
Lawrence provides the LUwireless network in all residence halls and academic buildings, as well as many other places on campus. Wireless access points are NO LONGER permitted on the Lawrence wireless network as they can interfere with the Lawrence wireless network. Registering your computer through your wired connection will register your wireless connection as well, and vice versa.

For information about wireless service see: http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/ITS/services/guides/wireless.shtml

STEP 2: UPDATE OR INSTALL ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

All computers must have current antivirus software installed in order to register on the LU Network. Download any updates available for your antivirus software. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to antivirus updates.)

If you currently do not have antivirus software, or if your subscription has expired, LU provides Kaspersky no cost to students. (This is the same software used on campus computers.)

To download Kaspersky antivirus, first be sure to completely uninstall any other antivirus software components including Sophos, live updates and registry folders – an essential step in order to properly install the new Kaspersky software. Once such files are uninstalled, go back to the Lawrence University Network page, click on the Information Technology Services provides antivirus software link and on the bottom of that page click the link to download Kaspersky.

STEP 3: UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM

All computers must have current operating system software in order to register on the LU Network. Please follow these steps to ensure your operating system has the latest software updates. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to operating system updates.)

  1. Go to www.update.microsoft.com.
  2. Click Express to check for high-priority updates.
  3. Windows Update will check for such updates and display them for your review.
  4. Select the updates and click Install Updates.
  5. Repeat 1-4 until you are advised that No more updates are available.
